As we covered, water is not the best source of minerals since those minerals are inorganic and not easily absorbed by the body. You definitely do not need water to meet your mineral needs, especially if your diet is whole-food based. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole animal foods are your best sources of organic, bioavailable minerals.
Why food minerals win
Come in higher amounts
Better absorbed by the body
Come with natural cofactors (fiber, enzymes, phytonutrients)
Minerals and their better food sources
CalciumRaw dairy, sardines, bone broth, arugula, dark leafy greens, sesame seeds, tahini, almonds
MagnesiumPumpkin seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, dark leafy greens, raw cacao, avocado, dark chocolate, salmon, mackerel, beef
PotassiumOranges, bananas, avocado, potatoes, sweet potatoes, coconut water, beans, lentils, mushrooms, beet greens, salmon, organ meats especially heart, bone broth
SodiumHigh quality unrefined salt, fermented foods like olives and sauerkraut
Trace mineralsOysters and clams (zinc, selenium), liver (iron, copper, zinc, selenium), Brazil nuts, egg yolks, bone broth, nuts and seeds (soaked), pasture-raised eggs, avocado, bananas, whole foods grown in mineral-rich soil. Iodine: seaweed, seafood, and being near and swimming in saltwater
Note on salt
Always choose a high quality unrefined salt. Some of the best brands: Himalayan crystal salt, Celtic sea salt, Maldon sea salt, Jacobsen salt. What I use a lot: flower of salt from Croatia's own salt factory in Nin, a small island in Croatia.
Note on nuts, seeds and grains
If you are eating any nuts, seeds, or grains, always soak them, rinse them, and sprout them if you can. This improves nutrient absorption, digestibility, and significantly lowers antinutrients like phytic acid that block mineral absorption.
?Why are so many people mineral deficient
A big part of the answer is the soil. Modern farming has stripped our soil of the minerals it once had. Because plants pull minerals from the soil, food grown in depleted soil is also depleted. So even if you eat well, you may be getting far fewer minerals than you think.
There is also something people rarely talk about: people throughout history were in constant physical contact with the earth. Touching soil, walking barefoot on grass, gardening with bare hands. They absorbed trace minerals directly through their skin and hands simply by being in nature. Today we are almost completely disconnected from the earth, and that is another reason mineral deficiency is so widespread. Getting outside, touching the ground, and eating food from healthy living soil matters more than most people realise.
